Day 15 we took a boat and then a bus from Tortuguero over to Arenal - La Fortuna. The drive to La Fortuna was beautiful. Arenal is huge!!! It's an active volcano in Costa Rica. We stayed at Arenal Backpackers, which was really nice but we were told by locals that all the hostels owned by the "Pangea brothers" are overpriced.
On Day 16 we took the lava tour out to Arenal.. The guide told us that the lava had stopped running 3 weeks ago, and some believe it is gaining momentum! Currently the volcano is having tiny eruptions instead. We stopped to take some pictures and were lucky enough to see one of these small eruptions!! It was really cool. It looked like a puff of brown smoke out of the top, and then white smoke running down the volcano. Amazing. Oh and our guide was an original survivor when the volcano erupted in the 60s so he was really passionate about the volcano. After we went to a lookout point which overlooked Lake Arenal... Breathtaking. The best part of the evening came next. We stopped at a resort called Baldi for dinner and relaxing in hotsprings! They have it set up so different tubs have water coming from different areas of the volcano so they are different temperatures. Some were way too hot for me. Oh and they had waterslides.. Really scary ones. I hit my head!! Great day!!! It was Lisas birthday too, I'm sure it will be one she won't forget!
Day 17 we separated from Lisa and we made our way to Monteverde, the cloud forest. The only transportation there was jeep-boat-jeep. They didn't pave the roads to curb tourism in Monteverde so it made for a long bumpy uphill drive. We stayed at the hostel Sleepers. The owners are really nice and dorm beds are only 6 bucks! The excitement of Monteverde are the canopy tours, and they live up to the excitement!! You fly down a cable in the cloud forest. They have 14 different ropes to go on, including the tarzan swing (my favourite) and the superman...where you actually fly like Superman through the clouds. So cool. I posted pictures. Check out the link on the right side (my pictures).
Day 19 we took 3 buses and one boat to get over to Santa Teresa. We had to take a bus to Puntarenas, then a ferry to Paquera, then a bus to Cabano, and one final dirt road bus to Santa Teresa. But this town is totally worth it. It is a very relaxed surf town in the Pacific Ocean. We hope to take a surf lesson soon!
